A few years ago, after hitting a few golf balls at a driving range in London, the idea of driving from London to Cape Town came about. In the 2 years that it took to prepare for such a trip, hundreds of hours was spent on the internet finding out a world of information. This info came from many sites, filtered and compiled.
Of course, the most valuable advice came from others who had travelled the same road, but this meant trawling hundreds of trip logs to narrow the amount of information that we required. What resulted was that our trip website was a huge success and we managed to network with many people, from all over the globe, making many friends along the way, but also going from complete novices to two people who were genuinely knowledgeable about products available, trip routes, vehicle prep and GPS navigation amongst other things.
Since the end of our trip, we have had multitudes of emails from people wanting to do a similar expedition, asking for advice and looking for answers to a huge range of questions.
www.4x4xAfrica.com was originally our trip log; and as we will continue to travel in Africa with our trusty Disco, we felt we could give something back and the idea to promote responsible and informed independent travel in Africa was hatched. Of course its success relies on information submission by overlanders; so please, get in contact and help create a comprehensive source of information for everyone's use.
We hope this site helps all prospective Africa travellers and inspires those armchair travellers to venture into the most diverse, challenging and beautiful continent on this earth. And to do it with respect for our fragile environment, to help local economies and to spread the word.
